Major fire as 130 firefighters battle commercial property blaze

A major fire has engulfed commercial property on Earl Road in Cheadle.

The inferno at Armadillo Self Storage Unit which began at 1am on Saturday morning is being fought off by 130 firefighters from stations in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The blaze, which has reached extreme temperatures, has been described as “difficult” and difficult and will take the better part of the morning to bring it under control.

Dave Russell, fire chief for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said partner agencies, including United Utilities, had been working hard to contain the warehouse blaze.

He said more than 40% of the building was destroyed.

He said: “I am the incident commander of a major fire in a commercial building.

“We called her shortly before 1 a.m. The building is single storey about 150 meters by 100 meters and it’s being used as a storage warehouse. It’s a major fire, a really well established fire.

“About 40% of the building is involved. In terms of resources, this is a significant incident. We have more than 25 devices here, including special devices, or about 130 firefighters.

He added: “It will be a protracted incident. We will be dealing with it until late in the morning. We are really well supported by our partner agencies, in particular Greater Manchester Police. NWAS and also United Utilities who are supporting us as part of of the water strategy, in terms of bringing significant amounts of water to the incident.”
