Great Lakes Credit Union Recognized as an Industry Leader with 2022 CMA Community Engagement Award

The Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) ​​added another award to its long list of accolades last Wednesday, when the Marketing Association of Credit Unions (MAC) officially recognized the GLCU team with the Bronze “Community Engagement” award for billion dollar organizations and more. The credit union was honored for its “Summer Celebrations” in 2021, during which GLCU hosted community festivities at three of its branches—Waukegan, Country Club Hills, and Crystal Lake—to increase neighborhood participation; increase awareness of GLCU’s products and tools and services; and show potential and existing credit union members how GLCU can help them achieve their financial goals.

The 2021 summer festivities welcomed families and individuals from the community with food trucks; promotional items and tickets for sporting events; children’s activities, including face painting and a petting zoo; raffle items; and gifts. Attendees had the opportunity to win concert tickets, sports memorabilia, movie passes, gift cards and more.

By engaging the neighborhoods it serves, GLCU has been able to make new connections and strengthen relationships with community members; the branch’s three successful celebrations drew approximately 600 people from the surrounding area.

In the wake of a pandemic isolation, GLCU understands that communities are looking for the human connection that credit unions have traditionally been known for. Even though GLCU is making strides in digitally transforming the member experience and using the latest technologies to deliver tailored services, such as with its first digital Libertyville branch, the summer celebrations were just one means by which the nonprofit organization has demonstrated its focus on personal relationships at its center.

This member-driven approach is one of the many reasons GLCU is consistently recognized as an industry leader on the national stage. In April, the GLMV Chamber of Commerce awarded the GLCU team the 2022 Community Involvement Gem Award for their support, participation and leadership in the Coats for Veterans initiative, as well as other community programs. assets of GLCU. Earlier this year, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) honored GLCU’s marketing team with two Diamond Awards – the first recognizing the organization for collecting and donating 1,750 supplies to local schools, and the second for his best social media campaign.

Previously, the GLCU team received the first-ever CUES DEI: Catalyst for Change award in 2021, and in 2019 the organization received first place in the 2019 DesJardins Financial Education Awards for leadership on behalf of financial literacy young people.


The consistent honors and accolades that GLCU has earned over the past few years underscore the level of excellence and community service that Great Lakes Credit Union is committed to providing to its members and those in the regions it serves. With the award-winning summer celebrations having been a success, the GLCU team looks forward to hosting similar events for its communities in 2022.
